GWN Application – FAQ

The Grandstream GWN Application is a free mobile management tool that extends the capabilities of GDMS Networking (formerly, GWN.Cloud) and GWN Manager to smartphones and tablets. It allows administrators to monitor, configure, and troubleshoot GWN networking devices remotely, providing real-time visibility into network health, devices, clients, alerts, and system settings. This FAQ document answers common operational questions to help users efficiently manage their GWN networks using the GWN app.


General Overview & Getting Started

The GWN application is a free mobile app that allows users to remotely monitor and manage Grandstream GWN networking devices from anywhere. It extends the functionality of GDMS Networking and GWN Manager to smartphones, enabling on-the-go network monitoring, configuration, troubleshooting, and alerts management.

The GWN app works with both GDMS Networking (cloud-based management) and GWN Manager (on-premise management). Users select the desired platform when launching the app and log in using the corresponding credentials.

Yes. The GWN application is completely free and does not require any purchase to manage GWN network-based devices through GDMS Networking or GWN Manager.

The GWN app supports managing GWN Access Points, GWN Routers, and GWN Switches that are registered or adopted into GDMS Networking or GWN Manager, provided they meet the minimum firmware requirements listed in the documentation.

The GWN app supports:

  • Android devices running Android 5.0 or later.
  • Apple devices running iOS 11.0, iPadOS 11.0, or macOS 11.0 (M1 or later).

The app is available on Google Play and the Apple App Store.

Yes. Users must already have an account created on GDMS Networking or GWN Manager, or be assigned a role or custom role by a GWN Management Administrator before logging in.

To log in to GDMS Networking, users need to enter the Email/Login Name and Password associated with their GDMS Networking account.

To log in to GWN Manager, users must enter the Server IP address, Email/Login Name, and Password of the GWN Manager account.

Yes. When logging into GDMS Networking, users can select the appropriate region (World, EU, or China) to ensure they connect to the correct GDMS Networking zone associated with their account.

Before logging in, the GWN app allows users to:

  • Discover GWN devices on the local network. Tapping on a device allows the user to view details such as IP address, MAC address, model, firmware version, and device role (master or slave).
  • Run a mobile speed test.

The About page displays the installed app version, indicates whether an update is available, and allows users to view supported device models along with their latest firmware versions.

Yes. The GWN app is designed to manage networks remotely, allowing administrators to monitor device status, client activity, alerts, and configurations from anywhere using a mobile device.


Dashboard & Network Monitoring

The Dashboard provides a centralized overview of the network, allowing users to quickly monitor the status of networking devices, WAN health, bandwidth usage, connected clients, and top network activity metrics.

Internet Health monitors WAN connectivity and displays WAN status for the last 12 hours using color indicators:

  • Green: Normal.
  • Red: Abnormal.
  • Grey: Offline.

This helps administrators quickly identify connectivity issues.

The Internet Health graph displays WAN performance data for the last 12 hours, allowing short-term monitoring of network stability and outages.

This section displays upload/download bandwidth usage and the number of connected clients over time. Users can analyze network load and client activity trends visually.

Users can view data over multiple time periods:

  • 1 Day.
  • 1 Week.
  • 1 Month.
  • 3 Months.
  • 6 Months.

This allows both short-term and long-term network analysis.

Yes. A drop-down menu allows users to select different networks, and all Dashboard statistics update accordingly for the chosen network.

Top Devices lists the GWN devices that consume the most bandwidth, helping administrators identify heavily used or potentially misconfigured devices.

Top Clients displays the clients generating the highest data usage on the network, enabling administrators to monitor heavy users or detect abnormal traffic patterns.

The Top SSIDs section shows which wireless networks (SSIDs) are using the most bandwidth, helping administrators evaluate SSID usage and performance distribution.

Top Websites lists the most accessed websites based on network traffic, providing insight into browsing behavior and bandwidth consumption patterns.

AR Scanning allows users to scan a GWN switch barcode using a mobile camera and view real-time device and port information using augmented reality. This feature is only supported on GWN Switches.

Note

Note: AR Scanning is supported on iOS devices only.

During AR Scanning, the app displays information such as connected device MAC addresses and confirms which GWN platform (GDMS Networking or GWN Manager) manages the scanned device.


Devices Management & Device Details

The Devices tab displays all GWN devices paired with the selected network and management platform. It allows users to view device status, monitor usage, and add or adopt new GWN devices.

To add a device to GDMS Networking, administrators must provide:

  • The MAC address of the device.
  • The password printed on the device sticker.

These details are required to securely register the device with the cloud platform.

GWN management platforms support adding more than one GWN router to the same network, allowing flexible network designs and scalability.

The GWN app provides two methods:

  • Manual Add, by entering the MAC address and device password.
  • Scan Add, by scanning the barcode on the device using the phone camera.

When manually adding a device, users must configure:

  • Device Name
  • MAC Address
  • Device Password
  • Device Group
  • Device Remarks

These fields help identify and organize devices in the network.

GWN Manager automatically scans the local network to detect available GWN devices. Users can select a discovered device from the list and adopt it directly into the GWN Manager platform.

Once adopted, devices appear under the Devices tab, where they can be monitored, configured, and managed.

Yes. Users can search for devices by device name or MAC address, and filter devices by model or status (Online or Offline).

For each device, the app displays:

  • Number of connected clients
  • Data usage

This helps administrators quickly assess device activity and load.

The Device Details page includes four main sections:

  • Usage
  • Info
  • Tools
  • Configuration

The available options may vary depending on the device type (AP, router, or switch).

The Usage section displays graphs for bandwidth usage and client count over time, allowing real-time and historical monitoring of device performance.

The Info section provides detailed device information, such as model, firmware version, IP address, MAC address, and other identification details.

The Tools section allows users to:

  • Locate devices.
  • Clear usage statistics.
  • Run Ping and Traceroute tests.
  • Perform Speed Tests (on supported AP models only).

These tools assist in diagnosing and resolving network issues.


Clients, Alerts & Notifications

The Clients tab allows administrators to monitor wired clients, wireless clients, and guest users connected to the network. It provides visibility into client activity, bandwidth usage, and connection details.

Yes. Clients can be searched by MAC address or hostname and sorted based on data usage, making it easier to locate specific devices or identify high-traffic clients.

When selecting a client, the app displays detailed information, including:

  • MAC address.
  • IP address.
  • Client status.
  • Connected SSID.
  • Channel.
  • Bandwidth usage.

This helps administrators analyze client behavior and connectivity.

To block a client, navigate to the Clients tab, select or search for the client, open the Info tab, scroll down, and toggle Block ON. The client will then be denied network access.

The Alerts tab displays alerts related to:

  • System.
  • Performance.
  • Security.
  • Network.

These alerts help administrators stay informed about network events and issues.

Alerts are categorized by severity level:

  • Emergency.
  • Warning.
  • Notice.

This allows users to prioritize critical issues over informational events.

Alerts can be filtered by:

  • Alert type.
  • Alert level.
  • Date interval.
  • Device name or MAC address.

This enables efficient review of specific events.

Using the three-dot menu, users can:

  • Mark all alerts as read.
  • Delete all alerts.
  • Delete selected alerts.

This helps maintain a clean and organized alert log.

Alert Settings allow users to choose which alerts are displayed and monitored. Alerts are grouped into system, performance, security, and network categories, each with detailed options.

System and Performance alerts can apply to the following, ensuring full infrastructure monitoring:

  • GDMS Networking/ GWN Manager.
  • GWN Routers.
  • GWN Switches.
  • GWN Access Points.

Security alerts focus on Rogue AP detection and apply to GWN Access Points, helping administrators identify unauthorized wireless devices.

Alert notifications can be delivered via:

  • In-app push notifications.
  • Email notifications (Email addresses can be configured to receive alerts for selected events).

Yes. Users can independently enable or disable email notifications and app push notifications for alerts, depending on their monitoring preferences.


Settings, Configuration & System Management

The Settings tab allows users to configure Wi-Fi, LAN, Internet, VPN, Firewall & Security, Profiles, and System settings, providing centralized control over network behavior and security.

Users can configure SSIDs, radio settings, and mesh networking, including enabling/disabling SSIDs, security options, VLAN association, and advanced wireless parameters.

Supported security modes include:

  • Open.
  • Personal.
  • Enterprise.
  • PPSK with RADIUS.
  • PPSK without RADIUS.
  • Hotspot 2.0 OSEN.

These options allow flexible wireless access control.

Client Isolation prevents clients from communicating with each other. It can be applied at the Radio, Internet, or Gateway level to enhance security and reduce unwanted peer-to-peer traffic.

Bandwidth control policies can be applied per SSID or per client, but creating or editing bandwidth control rules is not supported directly from the mobile app and must be configured via the web interface.

Mesh networking allows GWN Access Points to connect wirelessly to each other to extend network coverage. APs automatically evaluate link quality and select optimal paths for data transmission.

Users can create and manage VLANs, configure global switch settings, and apply features such as DHCP snooping, Voice VLAN, multicast control, and jumbo frames.

The app allows users to add and configure WAN ports and set up load balancing or failover (backup) between multiple WAN connections, depending on the number of adopted routers.

The GWN app supports configuring:

  • PPTP (client and server)
  • IPSec (site-to-site, manual and auto mode)
  • OpenVPN® (client and server)

VPNs can be bound to specific routers, WANs, or device groups.

Firewall & Security includes:

  • Port Forwarding
  • Wired Firewall Rules (routers only)
  • Wireless Firewall Rules (APs only)
  • Rogue AP detection

These features protect the network from unauthorized or malicious traffic.

Profiles allow reusable configurations such as Port Profiles, MAC Groups, Bandwidth Rules, PPSK groups, and Certificates, simplifying device provisioning and security management.

System settings include country/region, time zone, device passwords, LED control, reboot schedules, SNMP, URL access logs, guest information reporting, NAT pool configuration, and API features for analytics and monitoring.
