This FAQ document provides clear and practical answers to common questions about the Grandstream Wave mobile application. It is designed to help users understand Wave’s core features, login methods, calling, messaging, meeting capabilities, and configuration options when used with Grandstream UCM IP PBX systems. The questions focus on everyday operational use to ensure a smooth and efficient user experience.
General Overview, Requirements & Installation
Wave is a free mobile application that provides voice, video, messaging, and meeting collaboration tools for businesses using Grandstream UCM IP PBXs. It allows users to make calls, join meetings, chat, and collaborate remotely from mobile devices.
Wave is designed for business users, especially remote and traveling workers, who need secure access to their company’s UCM system for calls, meetings, and collaboration from anywhere.
Wave Mobile is available on Android and iOS devices. It supports Android 8.0+ and iOS 11.0+ according to feature highlights, with broader minimum OS support listed in prerequisites.
Wave supports Wi-Fi as well as mobile data networks, including 2G, 3G, 4G, and 5G, allowing flexible connectivity based on user location.
Yes, Wave is a free application provided by Grandstream for users connected to a compatible UCM IP PBX system.
Wave fully integrates with Grandstream UCM series IP PBXs and is compatible with UCM RemoteConnect for secure remote access.
Wave can be downloaded directly from the Google Play Store for Android devices or the Apple App Store for iOS devices and installed like any standard mobile application.
Wave requires permissions for calls, call management, camera, microphone, storage access, network access, and notifications to function properly. Users must allow these permissions for normal operation.
If contact access is allowed, Wave can display the phone’s local contacts within the application, making it easier to place calls and start chats.
Yes. On some Android devices, users must enable floating window or background pop-up permissions; otherwise, incoming call notifications may not appear correctly.
Background Mode allows Wave to continue receiving calls, messages, and notifications even when the app is running in the background. It is recommended to enable this to avoid missed communications.
If battery optimization is enabled, the system may restrict Wave from running in the background, which can cause missed calls, messages, or notifications. Disabling battery optimization improves reliability.
Background data allows Wave to receive calls and messages while running in the background. If disabled, no calls or messages will be delivered unless the app is open.
Yes. Wave supports common touchscreen gestures such as tap, press-and-hold, and swipe actions to navigate menus, scroll content, and switch video feeds during meetings.
Wave cannot be used as a standalone SIP client with third-party IP PBXs (Asterisk, FreePBX, 3CX, Cisco, etc.).
It must be used with Grandstream UCM IP PBX systems, including
- UCM63xx series.
- CloudUCM.
- SoftwareUCM.
- UCM RemoteConnect for remote access.
Login Methods, Authentication & Account Security
Wave supports multiple login methods, allowing users to sign in using standard credentials (server address, extension, and password), QR code login, biometric authentication, or Microsoft account Single Sign-On when enabled by the UCM administrator.
Users enter the SIP server address, extension number, and user password on the Wave login screen. Once authenticated by the UCM server, the user gains full access to Wave features based on assigned permissions.
QR code login allows quick authentication by scanning a QR code generated from the UCM, Wave Desktop, or Wave Web client. This eliminates the need to manually enter credentials and speeds up account setup.
Biometric login allows users to authenticate using fingerprint, facial recognition, or other biometric methods supported by their mobile device. Biometrics must be configured on the phone first, then enabled within Wave’s Account Security Settings.
Yes. If multiple biometric methods are configured on the mobile device, Wave will prompt the user to select which biometric option to use during login.
Yes. Wave supports Single Sign-On using Microsoft Entra ID (Azure AD) when enabled on UCM6300/A systems. This allows users to log in using their Microsoft 365 credentials.
Microsoft SSO requires UCM6300/A firmware 1.0.29.6 or later, Microsoft Entra ID integration completed by the administrator, and the user’s extension bound to a Microsoft account on the UCM.
Extensions bound to Microsoft accounts are displayed with a Microsoft logo badge in the UCM Extensions configuration page, allowing administrators and users to confirm SSO availability.
MFA adds an extra layer of security by requiring a second verification step during login, such as a time-based one-time password (TOTP), hardware token, or email verification.
MFA is enabled by the UCM administrator at the extension level. Once enabled, users must complete MFA binding through Wave Web or Desktop before they can log in using Wave Mobile.
Wave supports authentication apps (TOTP), hardware TOTP tokens, and email-based authentication codes, depending on the method configured during the MFA binding procedure.
Once MFA is configured, users are prompted to complete MFA verification every time they log in to the Wave mobile application using that extension.
Yes. Users can view and terminate active Wave sessions (mobile, desktop, or web) from the Login Device Management section in the Account Security Center.
This feature allows users to log into multiple Wave clients of the same type simultaneously. If disabled by the administrator, logging in on a new device will automatically log out the previous session.
Yes. Users can now switch between different Wave user accounts directly within the app using the built-in Switch Account option.
To do this, go to Me → Settings → Switch Account. From there, you can select an existing account to switch to. If no additional accounts have been added yet, you can add a new account first and then switch to it.
This allows users to manage multiple Wave accounts on the same mobile device without needing to manually log out and re-enter credentials each time. Only one account is active at a time, but switching between added accounts is quick and seamless.
Calling Features, Call Handling & In-Call Controls
Users open the dial pad from the Wave app, enter the extension or phone number, then choose either audio call or video call. Wave allows dialing other UCM extensions and external numbers permitted by the UCM.
Yes. Users can select Wave as the default phone application, allowing calls to be initiated directly through Wave instead of the native mobile dialer.
Yes. Wave supports Siri and Google Assistant. Users can initiate calls by saying commands such as “Use Wave to call [contact name],” which opens Wave and places the call.
Users can quickly redial the last called number by opening the dial pad or by pressing the pound key (#), which automatically calls the most recent number in the call history.
Call history is available in the Dial section of the Wave app. It shows incoming, outgoing, missed calls, rejected calls, and voicemail entries associated with the Wave account.
In call queue and ring group scenarios, Wave displays the name and number of the user who actually answered the call, rather than the original caller route.
Users can delete individual call records or select multiple entries to delete. There is also an option to clear all call history entries at once from the call history interface.
When running in the background, Wave rings the device and displays an incoming call screen. Users can answer or reject audio calls, and for video calls, they can choose to answer with video enabled.

No. End-to-end encryption is not supported for group chats or for audio and video calls.
Users tap the new group chat option, select contacts or departments, assign a group name, and create the group. Once created, all selected participants can chat together.
The group owner can manage members, control whether members can invite others, set chat history visibility, assign a new group owner, and dismiss the group entirely.
By default, newly added members cannot see previous chat history. The group owner can configure how much history is visible, including none, all, or limited periods.
Users can send text messages, emojis, images, documents, files (up to 50 MB), voice messages, links, and short videos. Rich text formatting is also supported.
Yes. Users can record and send voice messages in one-to-one or group chats. This feature is available only on the Wave mobile application.
Users can forward single or multiple messages to one or more recipients. Messages can be forwarded individually or merged and sent together in one message.
