SoftwareUCM Installation Guide – VMware Workstation

SoftwareUCM is an on-premises solution that provides businesses with complete control over their telephony systems, eliminating the need for cloud services. It offers many advantages, such as scalability by expanding storage capacity, flexibility in integrating with third-party applications, and security within the internal network.

By using VMware Workstation, users can run SoftwareUCM in a secure and isolated virtualized /environment, separate from the primary operating system. This setup makes it easier to test, troubleshoot, and scale the SoftwareUCM installation without affecting the host system, ensuring a more efficient and risk-free deployment process.

This guide provides a step-by-step walk-through for setting up a virtual machine on VMware Workstation, along with the installation and configuration of SoftwareUCM.

Critical

Copying or changing the UUIDs (Unique Universal ID) of the LVM (Logical Volume Manager) will result in failure to mount the disks after startup.

Prerequisites

Before proceeding with the instructions in this guide, users should ensure the following criteria are met:

  • VMware Workstation Pro Installed: Ensure that VMware Workstation Pro is properly installed on your host machine, version 16.1.0 or later.
  • SoftwareUCM Image File Downloaded: Ensure that you have the SoftwareUCM image file downloaded and ready for installation.

Creating the Virtual Machine on Vmware Workstation

To create a virtual machine for SoftwareUCM, please follow the steps below:

  1. Launch VMware Workstation and go to File→New Virtual Machine.
  2. Follow the wizard to create a virtual machine. Start by selecting the Custom configuration type.

  1. Review the Choose the Virtual Machine Hardware Compatibility content and click Next.

  1. Select I will install the operating system later and click Next.

  1. Set the Guest operating system to Linux, set Version to Other Linux 5.x kernel 64-bit, then click Next.

  1. Name your virtual machine and specify the directory path where its files will be stored. Once done, click Next

  1. Set the Number of processors, then click Next.

  1. Set the Memory for this virtual machine, then click Next.

  1. Select Use bridged networking, then click Next.

  1. Select LSI Logic, then click Next.

  1. Select SATA, then click Next.

  1. Select Create a new virtual disk, then click Next.

  1. Specify the capacity of the virtual disk, specify the way you want the disk space to be allocated, and click Next.

  1. Specify a name for the virtual hard disk, and click Next.

  1. Review configurations of the virtual machine to be created and click Finish.

  1. Select the created virtual machine, click Edit virtual machine settings.

  1. Check and ensure that there is only one hard disk on the virtual machine or an installation error may occur.

  1. Configure the CD/DVD (SATA) in the virtual machine to point to the .iso image file of SoftwareUCM and configure the drive to connect at power on.
  2. In the “Device status” section, click on the checkbox Connect at power on. Then, select Use ISO image file under “Connection” and browse to the location of the .iso image.

Set up Networking Configuration

SoftwareUCM can be configured to be used with one network interface or two network interfaces, depending on the need of the administrator. Follow the two sections below to configure the network interfaces with the hypervisor. If you are deploying the SoftwareUCM with a single NIC, you can stop at the first section below. If you are deploying the SoftwareUCM with dual NIC, you need to follow both sections below.

1. Set up the Virtual Machine with a Single NIC

1. Set virtual network as Bridged, and select the physical network card to be paired with the virtual machine. a. Go to Edit > Virtual Network Editor

Optional: If you don’t run the PC as an administrator, you need to click Change Settings to modify network settings.

Select VMnet0, then select Bridged. In the drop-down list of Bridged to, select a physical network card.

Click OK

  1. Select the created virtual machine, click Edit virtual machine settings.

  1. Configure the CD/DVD (IDE) in the virtual machine to point to the .iso image file of SoftwareUCM and configure the drive to connect at power on.

  • On the Hardware tab, select CD/DVD (IDE).
  • In the Device status section, select the checkbox of Connect at power on.
  • In the Connection section, select Use ISO image file and browse to the location of the .iso image file.
  • Click OK.
  1. Configure network of the virtual machine as Specific virtual network and select the virtual network that you have configured.

  • Go to Hardware > Network Adapter.
  • In the Network connection section, select Custom: Specific virtual network  
  • Select the VMnet0 to be connected.
  • Click OK.

2. Set up the Virtual Machine with Dual NIC

  1. Set virtual network as Bridged, and select the physical network card to be paired with the virtual machine.
    a. Go to Edit > Virtual Network Editor

  • Select VMnet0, then select Bridged. In drop-down list of Bridged to, select physical network card.

Add the network for the second network card, select VMnet2 as name.

Select VMnet2, then select Bridged. In the drop-down list of Bridged to, select a physical network card different from VMnet0.

  • Click OK
  1. Select the created virtual machine, click Edit virtual machine settings.

  • On the Hardware tab, select CD/DVD (IDE).
  • In the Device status section, select the checkbox of Connect at power on.
  • In the Connection section, select Use ISO image file and browse to the location of the .iso image file.
  • Click OK.
  1. Configure the network of the virtual machine as specific virtual network and select the virtual network that you have configured.

  • Go to Hardware > Network Adapter.
  • In the Network connection section, select Custom: Specific virtual network  
  • Select the VMnet0 to be connected
  • Click OK

  • In the Network connection section, select Custom: Specific virtual network.

Installing and Configuring SoftwareUCM

After creating the virtual machine, follow the steps below to install SoftwareUCM:

  1. Select the created virtual machine, and click Power on this virtual machine.

  1. Press the Enter key and wait until the installation process completes.

Change The IP Address of SoftwareUCM

SoftwareUCM is now installed with a DHCP-assigned IP address and an instance set up. If you prefer a static IP address or if your network does not support DHCP, you can easily change SoftwareUCM’s IP address by following these instructions:

  1. Login with user “support“, and enter the corresponding password.

  1. Press “1” followed by Enter, to access SoftwareUCM Management.
  1. Select Network Settings Update network configuration to set up an IP address, netmask, gateway IP address, and a preferred DNS server.

  1. Choose the Exit option “0” to return to the initial selection page, then go to SoftwareUCM Manage List SoftwareUCM to view the access information of the instance. (Make sure the status is “Running”).
Note:

If the instance did not get assigned an IP address, “Admin Portal” will appear blank.

Accessing SoftwareUCM

To access SoftwareUCM, users need to enter the IP-based URL listed under Admin Portal and log in using the initial username and password.
